He's moving all over the place in a crawl on his own.  It's a cross between scooting, a baby gorilla, and paddling a canoe.  And it's fast!

He pull up with ease all about the place which is awakening all new baby-proofing around here.  His favorite place is to play inside the toilet so that bathroom door stays shut at all times now.  His other favorite place is the basement stairs so that door also remains firmly shut.

Most recently he's dabbled in standing up by himself.  I know he's my fifth but I still find all of this so impressive.

A new round of clingy behavior started a few weeks ago.  Last time he was teething the same happened so I expected it to last a week, but he's still at it.  If I leave, he's sad the whole time I'm gone.  If he doesn't snuggle on my person every so often, he chases me around and clings to my legs until I get the hint.

He's fallen out of love with food a bit.  He still eats a fair amount but throws quite a bit, so that's fun.

And in a nutshell, that's Liam right now!  And now, here's his big, beautiful head.

This couple is the most loving and sweet couple. Levi is their second baby. This was their fourth shoot with me. Repeat clients are the biggest joy to my heart and are the lifeblood of this business of mine.

Lucy is easygoing, sweet, and so beautiful. Just a few days in we are settling into some good sleep, she nurses beautifully, and there is no trace of a fussy window yet. She's a dream. We are so in love!

Today as I write and post this I am still pregnant. Lucy's due date was yesterday, October 14. She's officially a day late and counting but I'm glad she didn't arrive on her due date, her brother's birthday. There are so few things in life that are just yours and a birthday should be one of them in my opinion.

Today marked our first day of school! We are continuing our homeschool adventure. It is a perfect year to stay the course as COVID 19 stuff still has "normal life" flipped on it's head. Schools only recently announced plans! As a result I didn't debate for very long what our family would be doing, especially when friends started asking me for curriculum recommendations for their Elementary kiddos. I may always have this debate in my head, constantly flipping through the pros and cons of the options: homeschool, private school (namely St. Paul's), and public school. I attended public school throughout and received a good education and was not marred... but I've learned I'm one of the lucky ones and especially with the school systems these days. We loved the P4J program at St. Pauls for you Maisy so it's a strong candidate for future learning as I often find myself at war with wondering if I'm doing enough to stimulate you and if, at some point, we'll need to find you more social interaction one way or another. Homeschool has been fantastic. I feel inadequate as a teacher often times, like things should be more exciting or more planned out or more purposeful and on and on, but I'm loving this built in time engaging with you and you are such a fast and amazing learners! What I know right now is that homeschooling is the only predictable bet for this school year. Things will keep changing in the schools to adapt to the COVID 19 progress, or lack thereof, but at home we can be steady.

This year I hope for more of the same and some more exciting newness in our curriculum plans. Penny, my goals for you are to solidify your fine motor skills with proper pencil and scissors manipulation, letter and number visual recognition, shapes, and maybe even start working on writing letters and numbers correctly. Maisy, my goals for you are spelling, sentence writing, and maybe even getting to some division by the end of the year.

I love that I have this unique problem, and that's fending you off for an hour or two in the mornings so we can start homeschool after important things like breakfast, morning chores, and a walk for me. You guys had your stuff out at 6:15am ready to do school immediately. And then proceeded to badger me about when we were going to start up until we started at 8:30am. It's cute, also exhausting, but cute! I feel like I have to sprint through the morning just to get school started for you!

So here's to a good school year my dears! We have lots of awesome learning to do with field trips, school themes, and holidays sprinkled in for a little extra fun!

Dear Maisy,

I can't believe my Maisy baby is 6-years-old! This year you turned me into a "growing up" (as you like to say). Suddenly I have a girl who thinks for herself, can ride a bike with two wheels, is losing her baby teeth (one down so far), and knows how to read and loves it!

This year we did kindergarten homeschool style. We loved spending that special time together and I love your love for learning.

You love to spend your days playing with your siblings whom you cherish deeply, crafting, listening to audio books, and simply being with me. You're so sweet, always willing to help me when I ask, lend a hand and care for your siblings physically and emotionally, and you're always willing and wanting of a smile, hug, kiss or snuggle. You take such good care of those you love and of your things, you are very responsible. I truly hope and pray you keep all of that wonderfulness in you all the days of your life.

For your shoot this year we grabbed your favorite books for a book photo: The Jesus Storybook Bible, The Borrowers (you haven't read much yet but it is your first big girl book of your own from me), Little House on the Prairie, and The Little Princess (you actually haven't read this one but it's pretty and I do think you'll like it when you get to it). Then we simply wandered around the dog park area of Palmer Park taking pretty pictures of you. Of course we did all the playful things like jumping, running, twirling, and tickling and those are all my favorites because I got that real, pure as sunshine, Maisy smile out of you.

You're a joy. I'm so very proud of who you are and so thankful that God gave you to me to raise and love and cherish all the days of my life.

In my experience, it's the only kind of photography that is 100% unposed. No one is paying any attention to me and that's the way I LOVE it! When I set out to be a professional photographer after high school I had my heart set on photojournalism, and yet, so much of the photojournalism I could get my hands on here in the midwest while working for magazines is still a mix of posed and candid. Not so with birth. Not a second of it is posed by me. My job, is to use the light I have and the scene I have in front of me and make it look as beautiful as I see all birth to be.

Lacey's birth was two hours you guys, TWO HOURS! Is that insane or what! Talk about a sprint through birth. And then, out came a 10 pound baby! You'd think the baby would have to be a peanut coming out that fast, but nope. She was a champ and it all was so beautiful to be a part of.

What I loved about this session was getting to incorporate Emily's dog, her boyfriend and, my favorite, good 'ol silhouette shots!  Emily was all easy: from her wardrobe choices, to getting into some tricky poses for me, and everything from smiles to serious to action.

For their shoot we started at their home then bounced around to catch some pictures with an open field, an awesome stack of logs, and at the old Schuler building.

This shoot was a dream come true.  Sometimes as a photographer you come across and image or a setting you can't live without.  On this day I got to photograph with a pile of logs!  What I also loved about this session was simply working with Kari + Nick and photographing with some snow.  I do love me some winter wonderland photography and Kari + Nick are just the sweetest, most fun loving couple.

Love this family.  Love little babies.  And I love that I also got to photograph Julia's birth.  I love birth photography.

Some years back I worked for Bella Baby Photography.  I worked in a hospital in Barrington, IL 2-3 days a week photographing any newborns that arrived the day before.  The photos usually were pretty simple.  Now that I have my own two little girls I understand the beauty of this service even more.  My very favorite picture of Maisy will always be this picture taken with our iPhones within the first hours of her life.  I wasn't smart enough then to realize it would have been so wise to let the hospital photographers photograph my baby girl.  There's nothing like those first moments when your baby is so fresh, red, and wrinkly.

I like to offer newborn photography like that of Bella Baby Photography to my dear friends.  The simplicity of the photos allows the baby's fresh beauty to take over the picture.  It's a simple rhythm of steps:  baby on the bed with a plain white sheet as a back drop photographed from several angles, baby in a basket photographed from several angles, baby's hands, baby's feet, and baby with any family members present that also desire a pictures with the little cutie.  Sometimes we get a little fancy and get pictures of wedding rings on toes or different poses with mom or dad.

I now offer this service for free.  I'll show up to the hospital (or your home for those who homebirth) the day after the delivery to get these precious pictures.  You are not obligated to buy anything but I'd bet you will!

On June 19 my Maisy girl turned 5! I don't know why by brain regressed and I find myself calling her or labeling her 3 years old on paper. Wishful thinking I guess! She's 5 in every way. She's always been beyond her years with life skills and responsibility. She's book smart and the look of her has always looked about a year her senior.

The older she gets, the more she becomes my little helper, my extra pair of hands, and my sidekick. I love her for that. I love that she gets excited about helping me on my photo sessions some day. I can totally see her being so amazing at that!

What I loved about this session was getting to photograph at the Olbrich Botanical Gardens again, particularly discovering the area packed with birch trees (I just love them), the ease of the couple towards each other and myself, and getting to play with the sunset!

Anyway, for this shoot we hopped to two locations on the grounds and I just love their choices for the photo spots! We photographed the extended family in the first location then moved to an old oak tree for the nuclear family photos, complete with individual portraits.

As soon as I got to their farm I quickly was innendated with eye candy all over: an awesome rustic barn, an open field with cows, a pine grove, and the perfectly partly cloudy day to set the lighting.

My favorite parts of this shoot were playing around in the hay loft and taking pictures of them with their favorite cows (yes, cows).

This is the third time I've photographed for this sweet family. I've loved each and every shoot so much! This one I loved for obvious reasons, I got to hang out with a sweet, tiny baby! And for not so obvious reasons, I have and always will adore taking pictures of newborns. It's a blend of portrait and "product" photography that I love. "Product" sounds odd I'm sure but when doing product photography I situate the objects just perfectly and they stay... it's the same when doing a newborn shoot! My primary goal as a photographer is to get these sweet babies so gosh darn comfortable that they become putty in my hands ;)

Just like any shoot, it wasn't perfect.  I point that out because I don't want you potential clients out there to think you won't get amazing images because you don't think you can look this perfect ;)  Well, the bugs were INSANE during this shoot!  There are times that babies cry (yup, that happened during our time too).  Sometimes kids are entirely uncooperative.  Someone may get too hot or too cold.  The wind may be CRAZY.  The good news is, I've been doing this for a long time, I've worked with every scenario possible, and I'm up for a challenge any and every time.  My own kids were the most crazy I've ever seen them during our family photo shoot this year actually and we still got some great images out of the deal.
